about

"I’m on the A heading home alone and nobody gives a rat’s dirty ass about me. Darkness and dancing. I’m slouching and on fire. Jeremy Bastard of Autodrone comes out with a solo thing during these dark days. Jeremy has assembled a wide variety of vocalists in this reflective, death-dance mix.

This release is fine for a big dark club, but I will say, there is an introspective quality to it which is a mirror to one man’s experience during this pandemic. While the songs would sound open in any club, there is an intimate feel to them which lends itself well to headphones, or earphones, or whatever these new-fangled young farts call them. There is a deeply personal feel to the record. While it builds on traditional electronic/goth beats, it is meditative at its heart. These songs remind me of the people I never met, the people I left alone at the club, the potentially gorgeous lost souls, mask-clad and aloof.

Jeremy has been doing this for a long time and his experience is reflected in his production and orchestration. It’s a solid, strong mix, accenting the right parts at the right times. He’s not a guy with an awful personality as he states on the Bandcamp page. Believe me, I know a lot of terrible, horrible, I mean truly horrible people. He’s not one of them. He’s a New Yorker though, and self-deprecation is our bread and butter.

I really love “Love is a Mistake.” It reminds me a bit of Fischerspooner’s cover of Wire. That’s a pretentious sentence, I know it, but it’s true, and that’s a good thing. Don’t worry, I’m disgusting and not cool and so it is less pretentious when you know this. Partial House is another personal favorite.

I can turn to this record when I am driving alone. I pass road signs and people and places I used to know and I know I’m headed for bigger things. There are ghosts on this record. Jeremy isn’t a fool. He knows how I roll and how much I like dancing alone on my couch in my black underwear. The neighbors think I am disgusting, but art wins out and they must live in a world full of both the beautiful and the ugly.

It’s 4 AM in some little shithole deathrock club in NYC and everyone has left and Jeremy is still there, spinning sounds like this, making the world right. His music is a friend in dark lonely moments. It’s dance nihilism.

Jeremy Bastard is a good man who knows his heart. You go and listen to this and you go and buy this. He knows you like to move it, move it and he’s got your dark, somber fix."
